Durbin Refuses to Endorse Rahm Emanuel for Mayor of Chi-Town

Well, the Daley dynasty is over in Chicago. He’s leaving some mighty small shoes to fill. I mean, how could Chicago politics get any worse than they were under Richard Daley.

CANDY CROWLEY: The President may also lose his chief of staff. So I was wondering how “Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel” sounds to you.

DURBIN: I can tell you that as you walk down Michigan Avenue in Chicago, you bump into at least 2 or 3 want-to-be candidates for mayor. It is so rare that the Daley opportunity is gone and he is retiring after wonderful service as our mayor, and now we have an opening here, that you have candidates from all over the city announcing their interest. I’m not kidding. There have got to be 10 or 20 viable names that are out there, and I have said publicly to Rahm Emanuel, “if you want to run, you can’t do it from the White House, you need to do it from the loop in Chicago.”

CROWLEY: No endorsement today though.

DURBIN: No.

So Arne Duncan, the Secretary of Education wants to have control of “for profit” educational institutions. The regulations as outlined in this proposal don’t seem to mention other institutions of higher learning like Harvard or Princeton and other four year colleges. No college or university I know of gives a 100% guarantee of gainful employment  after graduation. But that’s what this new set of regulations seems to try to do to for profit colleges. Make them guarantee gainful employment after graduation.

Unemployment The New Welfare System?

It would seem that the Progressive left has a new constituency. They’re called “99er’s” and there’s a lot of them. These are folks who have exhausted their 99 weeks of unemployment benefits. These people are clamoring for the Fed to give them another extension because they’re afraid of losing their homes and losing their utilities. Look at some of the web sites and read the comments sections and you get a sense that the working public is getting tired of hearing their sob stories. If a person comments; Woe is me, I can’t find a job that pays 20 bucks an hour so I’ll sit on my ass and collect benefits, someone else will comment back; Get off yer ass and off the computer chatrooms, go out and day labor if you have to. Illegal immigrants do it, why can’t you. Hell, I’d pick shit with the chickens if it paid.

There’s also quite a lot of fraud with unemployment benefits. I read one comment where this woman was complaining that she needed her benefits because she had a broken hand and couldn’t work and her social security wasn’t enough. WTF??  Isn’t one of the prerequisites of collecting unemployment benefits that you must be willing and able to work? The two times I’ve collected benefits, I had to show where I was actively looking for work at least three times a week. And the employment commission would also send me out for interviews that I had to show up for to be able to keep my benefits. I’ve also heard of people who collect benefits, but are working under the table for cash. So they’re screwing the American tax payer two ways.

Lets face it, the 99er’s are a political force to be reckoned with. I can foresee a couple of weeks before the Nov. elections, the congress passing legislation giving another 26 week extension to unemployment benefits for political purposes. That’s a lot of votes.
