Funny thing happened to me today in Cashiers, NC. I had stopped at the local Exxon convenience store to buy some cigarettes and lighter when I noticed a couple of older White guys handing leaflets out to the immigrants that hang around waiting to pick up some work. I asked what they were doing and one guy said they were handing out English translation helper sheets hoping to help the immigrants learn a little English.
The guy then started asking me if I would use any of these guys for day labor and I said most likely not. He asked if I was working much and I told him it was hit or miss so he tried to tell me where the food pantry was. I told him I didn’t live in NC, but commuted there for work and besides, I didn’t need to use the food pantry. He said something about my teeth and about the free dentist in town and told me I could make use of the free dentist if I could get a friend up in Cashiers to let me use their address. He was trying to coach me on how to game the system.
There seems to be a lot of this going on lately and it will probably only get worse as the election gets closer.

I had a neighbor ask why my family did not receive food stamps not too long ago (Most people in my area do). I told her that my husband earns too much money, so we don’t qualify. She proceeded to tell me the different ways that she has worked around the system over the years.
This really bothers me. I am not completely against welfare, because there are people who work full time and still need help to pay bills, buy food, etc. It is the people that are not reporting earnings, or people that are finding other ways to work the system that ruin it for the people that truly need it.
Thanks for your comment. Glad I was able to teach you a little something.
