Stacy McCain picked this story up today about some failed feminist lawyer who quit the profession and took up the brush to paint. The reason the story is “important” is because the delusioned ex-lawyer wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post trying to excuse teachers having sex with their students:
Besty Karasik is an airhead who quit her job as a laywer to become a painter. Whatever the art community gained by that transaction, the legal community lost no wisdom. In an op-ed in the Washington Post, Karasik argues for decriminalizing student-teacher sex:
[W]ith our legal and moral codes failing us, our society needs to have an uncensored dialogue about the reality of sex in schools. . . .
I don’t believe that all sexual conduct between underage students and teachers should necessarily be classified as rape, and I believe that absent extenuating circumstances, consensual sexual activity between teachers and students should not be criminalized. . . .
[T]he utter hysteria with which society responds to these situations does less to protect children than to assuage society’s need to feel that we are protecting them.
See, the problem is not teachers having sex with students. No, the real problem is the “utter hysteria” about this, and “society’s need to feel” that children are protected. In other words, the problem is your irrationality, whereas teachers banging their students . . . well, they’re in need of understanding and sympathy. Teachers who have sex with kids are victims, really — victims of your “utter hysteria.”
Very interesting theory there “lady.” The pseudo intellectual then goes on to tell us that she has friends who are teachers who often have sex with their students. WTF!?! Most jurisdictions have laws which make it a priority for teachers to report any situations like this they become knowledgeable of.
Just what we need, another airhead making excuses for immoral behavior by the dregs of society
Then, as I was perusing the web, I came across a couple of posts by Ace of Spades. He gets to the quick of the matter in his own inimitable style:
The Washington Post announces a new Common Core centered on the 3 R’s: readin’, writin’, and rape.
But there’s more:
As protesters decry the leniency of Rambold’s sentence — he will spend 30 days in prison after pleading guilty to raping 14-year-old Cherice Morales, who committed suicide at age 16 — I find myself troubled for the opposite reason. I don’t believe that all sexual conduct between underage students and teachers should necessarily be classified as rape, and I believe that absent extenuating circumstances, consensual sexual activity between teachers and students should not be criminalized….I do think that teachers who engage in sex with students, no matter how consensual, should be removed from their jobs and barred from teaching unless they prove that they have completed rehabilitation.
Wow, rehabilitation. Throw the book at ’em, huh?
But the utter hysteria with which society responds to these situations…
Just let that sink in.
This wasn’t a spontaneous comment; she chose those words, edited those words, resolved upon those words for her final draft.
Yes, I’m afraid to say this person actually thought long and hard about what she was going to write before setting fingers to keyboard.
Then Ace did some crackerjack research and came up with some paintings done by this budding artist:
Below, most of her page explaining her Art.
At various points in the text, I will intersperse a picture of one of her actual, real, honest-to-goodness paintings.
In 1998 I walked away from a “successful” career as a litigator in order to paint.
Also walked away from a “successful” understanding of the proper use of quotations marks.
Nah I get it, whatever, she’s trying to say that’s what “Society” deems “successful.”
But I sorta don’t think she was that successful at it, or even that “successful.”
I work at my Dupont Circle home/studio in Washington, D.C., in the company of three cats and, on occasion, the elusive and multi-talented EMT, musician and environmentalist, Bob Fener. I am largely self-taught, although I have studied with several very gifted Washington area artists including Annette Polan (portraiture), Patrick Kirwin (realism and illusion), and Mary del Popolo (color).Like most artists, I paint because I have to; the paintings are lined up inside my head demanding to be realized.
“Demanding to be Realized,”

Amazing…this woman quit her law profession to paint pictures of cats. I’m not really a cat person so I can’t make a qualified statement as to the quality of her work. I imagine my Uncle, the art professor might have a thing or two to say about the choice of color and the subject matter though.
Then our friend, Regular Right Guy has a thing or two to say about the newest assault on our sensibilities:
You knew this was coming, right?
I’m going with the full Alan Grayson here.
The Washington Post wants a teacher to screw your child. Maybe give her the spanking she deserves for the bad girl she has been in World History this year. She’ll probably love it.
SEX BETWEEN STUDENTS AND TEACHERS SHOULD NOT BE A CRIME [Excepted]
RRG Editor’s Note:Betsy Karasik is a former lawyer who turned in her license for a keffiyeh and the Essential Jack Kerouac and now is taking a turn at writing beat poetry… or something. But she has been a 14-year-old girl, which seems to be the underpinning qualification for this limp-ass Beltway treatise on why teachers should be allowed to bang students and get away with it.)
There is a painfully uncomfortable episode of “Louie” in which the comedian Louis C.K. muses that maybe child molesters wouldn’t kill their victims if the penalty weren’t so severe… That may be the case for many of us, but with our legal and moral codes failing us, our society needs to have an uncensored dialogue about the reality of sex in schools.
Interruption by RRG: No, Betsy, if anything we have way too much dialogue and not nearly enough life-without-parole sentences for child molesters, but please continue:
I don’t believe that all sexual conduct between underage students and teachers should necessarily be classified as rape, and I believe that absent extenuating circumstances, consensual sexual activity between teachers and students should not be criminalized.
Extenuating circumstances being? What, blowjobs are out? But the sex Mistress Betsy of the Dark enjoys gets a pass? Just what extenuating circumstances are we not delineating here?
Then Mzzz Karsik goes on to say that teachers who get caught shouldn’t be criminally punished, but just forbidden from teaching again until they become rehabilitated. Huh?
