Another Drug Addled Nurse Infects Thousands With Hepatitis C

Via Fox News

This has happened before, a drug addled nurse stealing prescription drugs from the patients she was supposed to be taking care of, has infected thousands with a deadly type of Hepatitis C.

As some of my readers know, I have/had Hepatitis C. I contracted the disease from my military service back in the late 70’s. I didn’t even know I had until about seven years ago. Thankfully, I was able to receive treatment and the virus has disappeared from my system.

Here’s the particulars from Fox News:

More than 7,000 patients at a Utah hospital were potentially exposed to an “outbreak” of hepatitis C after coming into contact with an infected former nurse – but less than half have come in for free testing to find out if they have the disease.

“We do consider this an outbreak,” Angela Dunn, a physician with the Utah Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told the Standard Examiner. “When we have two or more hepatitis C-related infections, we consider it an outbreak.”

Only 35 percent of the 7,200 patients contacted to receive free testing have come forward so far, FOX13 reported.

“We’re hoping for about half at the end of the day, but we only have a few weeks left of free testing,” Dunn said.

Several people have already tested positive for the disease; however, the final tally of those infected isn’t expected to be released until February or March.

Thankfully, today there are better treatment options for Hepatitis C.

I had to do the three drug treatment plan. If I had had to pay for it, it would have cost me a couple hundred thousand dollars, plus these drugs have some debilitating side effects.

The new drugs have very few, if any, mild side effects and are less expensive than the older treatments.
